If it's only obfuscation, base64 does the trick and its good enough in
mozilla that I can edit a domain name and be pretty confident that
someone over my shoulder isn't doing the transform in their head.

It's not secure but IMO it's better than rot13 ( which is what I was
replying to ).

My vote for what I would want for gnus is gpg.  The base64 is perhaps
an easy obfuscation if there is no gpg binary available or people
don't want to bother with passphrases.
