It's gone.  Gnus doesn't use that variable, and never has (as of
mid-'96, accoring to the latest report from the Ministry of Truth in
History).

You can customize your `From' header to (almost) whatever you like
using the `user-mail-address' and `message-from-style' variables.

Nope.  Just set `user-mail-address' to whatever you want.
