While I agree, that this the way to go, I would say that

is a big exaggeration, "nowadays" for me would mean, stable GNU Emacs,
which is 22: without EasyPG support, or Gnus stable release, no EasyPG
there, too...
So I think this definitely should be fixed for Emacs 22.1.
Sorry, no time to evaluate the proposed patch right now...
