Gnus can't select gmane group gmane.emacs.nxml.general

Platform: debian testing,
	  emacs 23.3.1
          git gnus updated Mon Feb 13 23:37:54 (adcf14de66016b792d94692dcbc2501866f137c4)

Just recently I got the minibuffer message
 Can't select group
when trying to enter nntp+news.gmane.org:gmane.emacs.nxml.general.

Other gmane groups work fine.

Any idea what to look for?

I ran into the issue in a different group
 nntp+news.gmane.org:gmane.comp.version-control.git.magit
after first reporting a spam article in that group with `M-d' and then
exiting the group and trying to reenter it.

So I stopped gnus, fetched the newest from git
 commit 840686ad5fde9d9ab16f57d989e7e19e0e352f99
 Author: Katsumi Yamaoka <yamaoka@jpl.org>
 Date:   Tue Mar 27 07:15:30 2012 +0000

They I rebuilt gnus with 
 (cd ~/git/gnus; make clean; make; cd lisp; make tags)

Then I started a new emacs process and started gnus.  In this new gnus I
could again enter
 nntp+news.gmane.org:gmane.comp.version-control.git.magit

But Gnus still failed with "Can't select group" when trying to enter
 enter nntp+news.gmane.org:gmane.emacs.nxml.general

Works for me.  It wasn't just that news.gmane.org refused incoming
connections?
