The reason to do this is that in the list of messages, you otherwise get an incorrect count. This is especially troublesome if you get lots of mails to one group, which usually expire quickly. I only have four chars "reserved" for that column in the group buffer, so it looks very ugly when it goes over 10k. Of course I could change it to five, but then it looks ugly when I have less... Anyway, another solution, which might be easier, would be simply to show the real number of messages instead of last # - first # (like counting the number of lines in the overview file or simply storing the numbers somewhere in .newsrc.eld).
