Illustrated manual

I've tarted the PostScript/LaTeX version of the manual up some more.
I've added smileys, a couple of background pictures (writing TeX is
fun, fun, fun for the whole family), and a picture of me, *me*, *ME*.
And stuff.  Oh, and I've harvested X-Faces, so don't be too shocked
when you find your own face in the manual.

I think I'll release the entire kit, so that if anybody wants to play
with it, they can.  But it'll probably work just for me.  Too much
dependence on particular versions of netpbm, LaTeX, fonts, etc.

Anybody have more ideas for more graphics that would look nice?  Oh,
and add substance, of course.  Mustn't forget that.

All the background pictures, smileys, and humorous asides do not help
new users very much. For Elisp illiterates, what the Gnus Manual needs
is a Hierarchical Overview, running about twenty, densely-written
pages. Unfortunately, new users and Elisp/Gnus illiterates cannot
write it and those who could, including many on this development list,
do not seem to be interested.

This is a call from the world of lowly end-users, for a gallant hero
to come forward and write such a Hierarchical Overview for the Gnus
Manual. What could be more fun than to pull on your hat, sit back, and
then to *synthesis* and *condense* your wide-ranging, in-depth
understanding of the Gnus system into a brilliant and elegant
twenty-page essay!

I apologize for barging in.  I've been following ding for a year or so
in hopes of learning how to better use Gnus which I need to accompany,
yes, Mule. I use Mule (and now, finally, Emacs 20.x) to read and write
messages and postings that include traditional Chinese, simplified
Chinese and Japanese. Nearly all other members of such mailing lists
as honyaku (for JE/EJ translators), nihongo-computing, and SWET (for
writers, editors, and translators of things Japanese) use M$ or the
Mac, but they still cannot get the multi-scriptual capability that I
do with Mule, in spite of its painful deficiencies.

Really, I just want a mug...

Oh, you want *substance*.  I don't do substance.  Frivolous whimsy is
my speciality.

Hm.  Actually, this sounds like a quite interesting project.
Describing everything about Gnus -- the rationale, the way it works --
but without going into all the variables and commands and stuff.  Hm.

But it sounds like work.  I don't do work.

massive mismatches summary/article

Hi,

I'm using qgnus-0.15/0.17 and I keep getting massive mismatches between
the summary and the article buffers, i.e. the information displayed in the
former doesn't match the contents of the latter. This happens particularly
badly when I visit a huge group. Today, I tried reading a linux group with
> 1000 articles, and of the 30 tries, only 6 were correct. Therefore, this
entire group was unusuable. I've already contacted Lars on this
subject, but he's probably busy ;-)

So... has anyone else experienced this, or have any suggestions what
might be going wrong?

Do you have a demon that periodically scans for new news? e.g.

(gnus-demon-add-handler 'gnus-demon-scan-news nil 5)

I've found that when I'm in the summary buffer of some group, and then the
demon kicks in and finds new news in the group, not only does the above
problem happen, but also that ticked articles get messed up (i.e. I lose
the articles I've ticked, and random other articles are ticked instead the
next time I enter the group.)  I've reported this to gnus-bugs, but Lars
hasn't had any luck with it so far.

So, if you do have a demon, that might be the problem;  if not, this might
be another data point for the same problem.

Do you think that you could describe the mismatches?

That is, what information is in the Summary buffer that does not match
up with an article buffer?

I've found this happening when I had two frames that both had the
summary buffer showing.  The summary buffer on one would be aligned with 
the article buffer correctly but the other would be off most of the
time.  I was able to "fix" this by getting rid of the summary buffer.  I 
went to the group buffer, hit z, and went back in.  Things were fine
from then on.  That is until I left a summary buffer in my graphics
xemacs and attached to it with a tty and again had multiple frames.

Is that the illustrated one at www.gnus.org?  Is there a single-sided
version?  How can I create one?

Not yet.  I'm still fiddling with it.

You probably can't, but when it's getting more "finished" I'll
generate a whole bunch -- A4, legal, single, double, etc.

Illustrated Manual

The Gnus Illustrated Manual Building Kit can now be found at
<URL:http://www.gnus.org/pspackage.tar.gz>.  I've had a few requests
for it, so now you can have a peek, if you want to.  I'm guessing it
probably takes a lot of hand-holding to get it to work unless you're
running Red Hat Linux.
