I've seen this bug myself, but I'm not able to reproduce it, and I
haven't found out just exactly what's happening.
Something puts something invalid into `gnus-newsgroup-replied'. Upon
group exit, you see the bug, but that's a result of what happens when
you send the mail, as you've described.
Are you able to reproduce this bug in a simpler fashion -- something
that doesn't involve Word files? :-)
