Does Gnus (or Gnus/w3) make any attempt to do this (in the rendering
sense, I guess)?

I'm not suggesting that HTML in email is a good idea or anything, but
given that Gnus with w3 does pretty well at simple HTML, it oughtn't
to be *too* hard to do similarly with (simplish) mhtml.
