Can someone describe what string of events happen when a user posts to
a newsgroup using a "default" gnus or at least the most common setup
usage.

What steps are involved in funneling that post to the proper place.
What local agents handle it? What remote agents?
Are any Mail Handling Agents involved at any stage?

Is it all NNTP?

Yes.

Unless when it isn't. If, for instance, you post using nngateway or
something.
