Its an octal representation of a character your charset doesn't have 
Try putting this in .emacs

(standard-display-european 1)

More precicely, because MULE in FSF Emacs 20 is brain-damaged.

XEmacs 20 apparantly does not suffer from the \201 bugs (if it does I have
not heard of them).
