gnus-sort-gathered-threads-function / gnus-thread-sort-functions

Hi folks,

in which way do gnus-sort-gathered-threads-function &
gnus-thread-sort-functions interact?

I've set gnus-thread-sort-functions to:
(setq gnus-thread-sort-functions '(gnus-thread-sort-by-number
                                   gnus-thread-sort-by-date))
i.e. first sort articles/sub-threads by date, then by number

Now, what effect does gnus-sort-gathered-threads-function have on
sorting subthreads if it is set to its default
('gnus-thread-sort-by-number')?

Will the subthreads be sorted according to date (as
gnus-thread-sort-functions suggests) or according to number (as
gnus-sort-gathered-threads-function suggests)?

BTW: Why can't I customize gnus-sort-gathered-threads-function with
M-x customize-variable?

`gnus-thread-sort-functions' sorts the threads while
`gnus-sort-gathered-threads-functions' sorts "sub-threads" inside
"gathered threads".
