Working in the server buffer recently I discovered 3 nndir servers that
look like:
{nndir:~/News/cache/nntp+sunsite/auc/dk/emacs/w3/beta/} (opened)
{nndir:~/News/cache/nntp+sunsite/auc/dk/emacs/ding/} (opened)
{nndir:~/News/cache/nntp+news/silcom/com/comp/unix/shell/} (opened)
Are these the cache servers I have heard mentioned?
What do they do? The files they represent are deleted but the servers
will not be killed with 'k' or any other command in server buffer. I get
a message that they are read only servers.
If servers cannot be killed with 'k' from the 'server' menu button, then
what is its use?

No.

No particular use. Gnus will simply list all servers it know about in
that buffer. Even these nonsensical servers.
