I've been plugging along with Bills w3 for a very long time but now wish to
update to something still under devel. What are the popular choices now for
rendering html inside gnus? And where can I get a leg up on setting it up?

emacs-w3m is great! http://emacs-w3m.namazu.org/
Installing it and adding this to my .gnus did the trick for me:
(setq mm-text-html-renderer 'w3m)
The emacs-w3m info pages are pretty good too (and fun to read).
