I'm thinking I should group newsreaders by operating systems on
Statland, so what systems are there out there? (I'm not thinking
"obscure", but "actually", as in "tables for the database and buttons
for the registration form".)

Unix
Windows
Windows CE
AmigaOS
Archimedes
BeOS
VMS
DOS
Other

The list of newsreaders can be found at
<URL:http://quimby.gnus.org/cgi-bin/newsreaders>. It's a bit messy at
the moment, since I've added buttons to make it easier for me to
search for the newsreaders so that I (or anyone else; please do feel
free to register newsreaders yourself if you have some minutes you
don't know what to do with) can add URLs.

Good grief, I had no idea there were so many. Don't people have anything
better to do than write more newsreaders?  :}

I registered URLs for Forte Agent and knews. The closest I could find to a
home page for trn is the hypertext FAQ at ohio-state.edu. Would that be
appropriate for your table?

There are newsreaders for Palm OS as well.

I didn't find xvnews in your list of newsreaders, and didn't see a way
to add it.

Yup.

There's now a bunch more URLs added; thanks to y'all, whoever y'all
are. But please do add more.
<URL:http://quimby.gnus.org/cgi-bin/newsreaders>. After more have
been added, I can start grouping them by operating system and make the
thing actually useful.

Similarly with MT-NewsWatcher:
operating system: MacOS (maybe a better name for it than "Apple",
which is what Statland currently uses)
  URL: http://www.best.com/~smfr/mtnw/mtnewswatcher.html

(This is a variant of NewsWatcher, which is on the list, but is a
different program, hence has a different URL.)

I assumes that all the Newswatchers were the same program. They

No, not really. NewsWatcher is quasi-open source, and the tree has forked
several times. The original NewsWatcher has maybe one release per year,
mostly to keep it working gracefully with Mac OS updates or when a serious
bug is found. MT-NewsWatcher is actually more popular than the original due
to it's multi-threaded user interface. There's also Yet Another NewsWatcher
(a.k.a. YA-NewsWatcher) and Value-Added NewsWatcher (a.k.a. VA-NewsWatcher)
and Word Services-NewsWatcher (a.k.a. WS-NewsWatcher). All of which adds
various features. Development has pretty much halted on YA- and VA-, but YA-
is still very popular. It used to be the most popular. It was number 13 on
the newsreader posting chart (November 1998 statistics) compiled at
<http://www.cs.uit.no/~kjelli/newschart.html>. MT-NewsWatcher was number 11.

Yikes.

But isn't it reasonable to consider these all to be Newswatcher, only
different versions, just as I consider all Mozillas to be Mozilla and
all trns to be trn, and stuff...

In my opinion, no, but I don't really care one way or the other. All Mozilla
newsreaders have been released by one entity, namely Netscape (so far
anyway). The various NewsWatchers have different (though similar) user
interfaces, different feature sets, and different source code
maintainers/developers. I think it would be akin to considering SEMI and Gnus
to be the same newsreader for Statland... Or XEmacs and Emacs to be the same
editor if you were compiling editor usage statistics.

P.S. I also recommend changing "Apple" to "Mac OS".

Maybe. It depends, for example, on what the URL for each newsreader
at

  http://quimby.gnus.org/cgi-bin/newsreaders

is supposed to do. There used to be a web page which kept track of
all of the versions of NewsWatcher, but it seems to have disappeared.
Since such a thing doesn't exist, it might be useful to specify a URL
for each one. (Whereas with Mozilla, you can give a single URL and be
content, with the different NewsWatchers, people will not find
MT-NewsWatcher if they go to the site for NewsWatcher, etc.)

A little cheating to get Gnus further up the charts?
