I'm guessing that the nnml articles themselves are corrupt -- that is, 
that there are blank lines early in the header that makes it
impossible for Gnus to get the info.

Or it might just be destroyed NOV files.  `M-g' one of the nnml groups 
where this happens, and then immediately `M-x
nnml-generate-nov-databases RET'.
