`seen' is special because it's the only marks lists that's never
uncompressed. All the other ones -- `tick', `dormant', etc -- are
uncompressed on group entry and then compressed on group exit. `seen'
is not, and that's because it's assumed that `seen' will grow bounded
only by the size of the group, while the others will have a more
moderate growth pattern. `seen' will typically be something like
'(1 . 45787839)' in a suitably active group.
