I don't think that variable is supposed to be tweaked manually.  It's
for Gnus's internal use, isn't it?

That's probably the default gnus-message-archive-method.  Is that
variable nil when you see this?  That would be strange.  Maybe
something in your .newsrc.eld is corrupt.
