It's probably more of a Windows/Unix culture mixup. Windowsey mail reader are geared to creating messages that first have all the text written by the sender, then the signature, then quoted messages, attachments, and several virii. Unixey mail readers have quoted text interspersed with new text, and then the signature comes last.
