May I suggest that either the announcements get sent after some
suitable delay, or that the distribution files get pushed to
www.gnus.org by some faster manual process, since what I just picked
up from this URL still calls itself 0.74.

Yes, but I would instead suggest that people wait for 10 minutes after
the announcement before trying to fetch it. :-)

But I'll try to delay the announcements a bit.

Well, you said it was available, so I went to avail myself of it. :-)

(I've been delaying upgrading above 0.69 due to lack of time and the
apparent instability in the new mail-handling functions and wanted to
let other folks beat themselves to death for it first. Now that I'm
ready to give it a try...well, I suppose impatience should be avoided
at times.)

Might there be a quick summary of the minimal change needed to one's
environment to go from the simplistic old style of
(setq nnmail-spool-file (list "po:karl" (getenv "MAIL")))
to whatever's new, nifty, and current?

I see I'll have to deal with all the art.disp. hooks' removal...

Using pgnus v0.75, in the article buffer, using nnfolder, e.g. in a
folder named "gnus", I'm getting headers like

gnusFrom: Lars Magne Ingebrigtsen <larsi@ifi.uio.no>

Toggling the "verbose headers" twice gets rid of the "gnus".

Best,
george

Not for me. For sure it has still something to do with the picons (I
display picons from the network and in the article buffer).

Also not for me, but I see the following: When I view an article,
various parts in the header are buttonized and emboldened. This is
good. When I press 't' to see all the headers, the appropriate strings
remain buttoned and bold, but when I press 't' once more to hide all
those headers, the bold disappears. I assume this is not the intended
behaviour. The buttons remain in place.

OK. Pressing twice `t' unpiconizes the mail adress for me.

That sounds right; for some reason I saw a gnus-picons-related load
file being loaded at some point (when entering the article buffer,
maybe). This didn't use to happen, and I wondered why it did this
time...but forgot immediately.

Yup. Fix in Pterodactyl Gnus v0.76.

Try switching picons off and see whether that "fixes" things.

Does the mail active file get updated properly, and if it does, are
the .overview files updated properly?

Seeing this too, but with nnml.

But that also gets rid of the picons in the mail address. It must be
related to picons. In newsgroups I don't see this, and instead the
Newsgroups: header is properly piconified.

except that gnus-use-picons seems to be nil already. So I don't know
how to switch it off! As far as I know, I didn't do anything to switch
it on.

(Should have experimented before writing the first time... )
--text follows this line--
If I do:
 (setq gnus-treat-display-picons nil)

the problem (*) is fixed.

This is defcustom'ed in gnus-art.el via:

(defcustom gnus-treat-display-picons (if gnus-xemacs 'head nil)
  "Display picons."
  :group 'gnus-article-treat
  :type gnus-article-treat-custom)

So I guess since I use xemacs, it is on by default.

So what does gnus-use-picons do?

`gnus-treat-display-picons' is the variable that controls picons now.
