That looks very nice for nnimap groups, but I wonder whether something
like this could be handled more generally by Gnus.

That is, Gnus would start keeping track of which articles the user had
requested before.

Let me explain.

The user enters a group with the articles 300-400 in it.  Gnus adds
a `(seen (300 . 400))' range to the group in .newsrc.eld.  The next
time the user enters the group with articles 300-450 in it, Gnus would
know that 401-450 were new and could be marked with
`gnus-recent-mark'.

What do you think?
