I can't find anything in the gnus manual about an address
book... being able to type in a nick name or an alias name in
the To: header in gnus and have gnus fill in the real email
address. Surely this has been done. Can anyone give a hand??

(I also had/have a hard time finding this information in the manual -
adding an "address book" item to the index would probably be a good idea).
Either install the BBDB program (which I know little about) or fill
out the ~/.mailrc file like this:
=====================
# Comment
alias you "Phil Humpherys <phumpherys@utah-inter.net>"
alias gnus "ding@gnus.org"
alias youandgnus you gnus
=====================
Hope this helps...
