At least I've found how to work around the bug: Turn off the sparse
threads. This is probably also the reason why noone noticed it -- it
shows up only with sparse threads turned on.

Which bug is this exactly? The bug which causes Gnus to not display
new mail at random?

Would you care to mention *which* bug?

Summary bugs happen once in a while, and -- yes, i have
gnus-build-sparse-threads = 'some. Maybe all will be well if I turn it
off?

The one I reported in <kigd8f9txy4.fsf@jagor.srce.hr>, under the
subject "Gnus fails to show some email messages".

Yup, that one.

I've now installed your patch, and it appears to fix the problem
(although I am not positive, yet.)

I'll see if the problem shows up again.

Does that mean that the patch I sent in
<yg47m5fu9xw.fsf@lombric.s-ip.eunet.fr> does not work ? It patches
`gnus-build-sparse-threads'.

Gnus has failed to show me new mail when the messages are entirely
new and not part of any thread. In addition I did not have sparse
threads set.

It was suggested that the articles might have IDs that duplicate those
of others so I used glimpse to index my entire mail spool and then
searched for duplicates to articles Gnus failed to show. There were
none.

May be you can post all the headers so that we can see if we can
reproduce this... Hrvoje's detailed report was very precise and made
it fairly easy to find the trouble.

Hi,

Here are the headers of the most recent messages, 76-86, many of which
were spam. I got 76, 77, 78 and 79 but 80-86 didn't appear although
it's possible that 81 did (I don't remember).

I don't know how much help this will be to you.

I did not get the beginning of this thread but I wonder if this is the
same "bug" I noticed a few days ago. For example:

I get 2 new (no duplicates!) emails which are shown correctly in the
summary.
Without reading them I leave the summary buffer and return to the
group buffer.
Some minutes/hours later I enter the summary buffer of my email again.
This time _one_ of the new messages is shown _twice_ and the second is
not shown at all. Selecting the first and after that selecting the
second entry in the summary results in showing the _same_ message.
Deleting _one_ of them (via B-r) results in marking _both_ entries in
the summary as deleted.
As far as I have noticed there is no way to get the "lost" message
again. :-(

Did anyone else of you notice such a strange behaviour, too?

The problem is that I can't either. I think that the person that
started the original thread said that the bug was intermittent and
that Lars couldn't reproduce it.

When it happened to me twice I couldn't find a reason for it nor could
I reproduce it.

Thanks for trying.

Well it just happened again. It probably happens all the time but
because I don't have many really low volume folders I don't notice
it.

The message in question is number 652 and was placed in the group
spam; I've included it below and below that is my Gnus environment.

I use nnml to read mail. A message numbered 652 was incorporated and
split into the "spam" group however I noticed that the number of
articles in the group did not increase. No matter how I entered the
group the file was invisible via Gnus. It was visible via more, scan,
show and exmh.

The .overview file _had_ been correctly updated and message 652, the
last message, was at the end of the file.

My .nnmail-cache file contained only one copy of 652's Message ID and
it was so near the bottom of the file it could only have been included
from the last batch of mail.

There were 218 messages in the folder however Gnus believed that there
were 359. The relevant line in my active file read: "spam 652 293 y".

Typing "g" and "1 g" had no effect. However if I started versions of
Gnus without exiting the already running version first
(plugged/unplugged, read/don't read save file, master/slave), the file
652 would be visible. Note that I exited the groups and Gnus with "Q".

When I restarted the original Gnus the file was visible from it too.

There was no mention of the file number 652 in my
,newsrc-localhost.eld file.
