Considering Gnus is so good at showing digests as groups, is it
possible to have its very own mailing list posted out as a digest for
certain subscribers?

I think Jason would have to answer that, but I'd think that it's not
something that would be used by very many people.

This is quite active. If a digest were possible I suspect more people
would subscribe. The noisiness is probably off putting for
many. Emacs-devel does a digest and its very informative. I suspect the
gnus digest would be equally as informative and prompt more people to
take part or keep up to date. Anyway, just a suggestion. Most mailing
lists do digests from what I can see.

I mean, I could set it up, but digests are such a terrible concept and
the whole point of using Gnus in the first place is to be able to deal
with volumes of mail without resulting to unpleasant hacks.  I guess I
just don't see the point.

Me neither.  I mean, if the volume is too big for your mail reader,
then, er, you're not using Gnus.  :-)

One could also just read the list via Gmane if there's too many
emails...
