Once again, I've forgotten to switch `mail-source-delete-incoming' on
in the released Gnus version, so I'd like to push out Gnus 5.8.2 in
not too many days.  Perhaps Tuesday...

Too late. Some crazy norwegian released 5.8.2 on December 3, 1999.

Have all the rfc2047 problems for XEmacs been solved?  If not, I'd
suggest to wait a few days more.

Not yet for me.  I can read them, ie I don't get an error any longer,
but the decoding doesn't work.  As a side effect, BBDB wants to add
new AKAs for a lot of people :-)

IMO your suggestion is right. Here (XEmacs 21.5.12) I had to go back to
gnus 5.10.1 because in the recent version decoding is completely b0rked.
Names in the summary buffer don't get decoded any more, articles with
UTF8 encoding which I could read without problems show only funny signs.
Only plain ASCII works well.
