I added the spam-use-dig variable (t by default) that tells spam.el to
use dig.el instead of internal DNS checks.

dig.el got the query-dig function, which will actually check an IP
address.

spam-check-blackholes was extended to support the spam-use-dig
variable.

I tested pretty extensively and found no problems with the new
functionality.  I enabled the blackhole check by default in spam.el
(spam-use-blackholes).  Does anyone think it should be off by default?

I also updated the manual with the information on blackholes.

Let me know if you find bugs or documentation errors.
