Well, it depends on how you're rendering the emphasis. When you're rendering to underlines, there is a difference between underlining an entire phrase and underlining each word separately. Gnus currently displays _this underlined phrase_ the same way as _this_ _underlined_ _phrase_. I think they should be different, because there is a difference in meaning here.
