Just wondering what kind of problems I might cause my self if after
several months of accumulating mail in unix style directories:
/Mail/mail/junk. I now want to set `nnmail-use-long-file-names' to
't' .

How will gnus handle the change? Just create a new set of files?
Do I have to move things manually to the new setup?

I think the backends disregard this variable if the groups already
exist. But I may be wrong.
