Yeah, if nnir is able to find the article, then there should be a way to make `^' hook up to that. Looking at the code, wouldn't just changing this to do a search: (deffoo nnir-request-article (article &optional group server to-buffer) (if (stringp article) (nnheader-report 'nnir "nnir-retrieve-headers doesn't grok message ids: %s" article) ...)) and then putting the nnir select method into `gnus-refer-article-method' work? Er, no, we'd probably have to have a special `current-nnir' thing like you said...
