Byte-compiling the current CVS version of PGnus bombs out on a bunch
of the .el files with

I saw the same thing. Just search for the file that contains `cccc'
and remove the characters.

Hmm, I thought I'd already tried this, but I must have been very tired
at the time since these offending characters were right there in
gnus-ems.el.
