Sorry, no solution for something that has never worked. :-) (Or should
that be :-( ) I just thought I'd follow up with the solution to my
problems.  Apparently a couple of the messages in the group were made
during Y2K-testing, and thus accidentally had the year 2000 embedded in
the dates.  I manually edited these to say 1999 instead, and the group
now expires correctly.  Wether this has exposed a Gnus bug or feature, I
am not a competent enough a lisp hacker to say.
