Ummm... I don't understand what you are describing.  At least I have never
seen the behaviour you describe.

Read messages are automatically marked as read.  Unread messages I can mark 
deletable with 'd', which moves point to the next message.  total-expire

This is a Bad Idea for something that works from a news reader's
perspective which remembers read messages by number.  If you give a new
message a number that has already been used, it will appear to have been
read, and well, that is just plain wrong.
