Hi,

I use: "(setq gnus-group-line-format "%M%S%p%m%P%5y: %(%g%)%l\n")" in
my .gnus file to put an "%" mark in front of mail groups with new
articles in them.

With recent versions of Gnus I've found that groups stay marked even
when new mail is collected and the marked groups have no mail.

What's going on here?

The behavior changed -- the mark isn't removed until you visit the
group.

This isn't my experience. The mark remains after I've visited the
group. Even after I've read all the items in the group (no ticked
articles) the "%" mark is still visible if I use "L" to see all
groups.

When I get mail in a group not already marked, the new group is marked
but all the old marks remain.

The mark is cleared when you leave the group, not when you enter it.
Would it be your difficulty?

No. The mark remains no-matter what I do.

All those variously colored quotations are kind of nice! This is an
example of the fruit salad syndrome, I presume! :-)

The `%' mark appears and disappears quite appropriately for me.
It appears whenever new mail gets split-added into a mailgroup, and
later vanishes after the said mailgroup has been visited and exited.
There has to be an explanation somewhere. The mark is cleared from
`gnus-sum.el', when `gnus-summary-exit' calls `nnmail-purge-split-history'.
Maybe `nnmail-purge-split-history' does not do its job for you, or maybe
it does not get called when it should, for some strange reason? Or is it
a display refreshing problem?

Do you use the same setq command as I do to set the mark?

I have this problem with both Emacs and XEmacs.

I'm not sure if it helps, but I use this `setq' command:

(setq gnus-group-line-format
      (if window-system
	  "%6,6~(cut 2)d %M%S%p%P%m%5y: %(%-60,60G%)%l\n"
	"%6,6~(cut 2)d %M%S%p%P%m%5y: %(%-60,60g%)%l\n"))

It makes no difference.

Thanks.
