New series; new name

New series; new name

[Lars Magne Ingebrigtsen]

Well, I had planned on calling the next series "Millennium Gnus" (to
celebrate that it was now one thousand years since one thousand years
ago), but now that it seems that it will survive into 1999, I don't
think that's a good idea any more.  People might think that it had
something to do with, well, that other celebration, which is certainly
something that I want to stay well clear off of.  Of.  Off.  (I never
know when to stop those run-on sentences.)

So: The next name must start with "P", and it must be an animal, for
obvious reasons.  No, "Panther" isn't an option.

Anyone have any ideas?  "Pussycat Gnus"?  P...  P...  Oops.  Perhaps
there aren't any other animals that have names starting with "P"?

pufferfish, python, puppy, ptarmigan, porpoise, pollack, polecat,

A Possum (no leading o) is a marsupial, squirrel-like creature living in Tropical Australia (and possibly other parts by now).

Something called the "[o]possum" also inhabits the U.S. ... the animal
is also a marsupial, but it's larger, slower, blinder, and dumber than
a squirrel.  It has a pointed snout and long, thin tail which make it
look a bit like an oversized, mentally deficient rat.  Most people
call them "possums" here, also, and the offical, dictionary name
("opossum") tends to be used only by nitpickers and stuffed shirts
these days.  Not being either (well, at least not being a stuffed
shirt <g>), I'm not sure why I even mentioned "opossum" in the first
place.  :)

Are you sure it's marsupial?  I wasn't aware that there were any
marsupials outside Australia.  On of the interesting quirks about its
(Australia's) fauna.

Marsupials do indeed exist in the Americas, but not in the same
abundance or variety as Australia.

Hm... I saw Floyd (not Pink) fry puffins with a lot of Aquavit on the
Lofoten island of Røst, in a program on the telly.  And they call us
norskies barbarians...;-)

(but the result *did* look very good to eat... and Floyd was way too
drunk to eat any himself, by the time it was finished)

a pika is also a small rodent related to the rabit which lives in arctic north
america. It also happens to be the name of the student coop where I lived at
school. It would please me to no end to have a version of Gnus named after the
pika as well.

What's wrong with you own idea?  `P... Gnus' sounds perfect to me.

If someone ask, we can always tell them it is named after the animal.
