Actually, that function is just the qsort comparison function. The
real work is done in gnus-sort-threads. That's why
gnus-thread-sort-by-number gets called so much.
I'm not sure you could change it so much, because it looks like the
multiple gnus-sort-by exist so we can choose how we sort things, and
gnus just passes in a compare function....
