Hi,

i reinstalled emacs and gnus from scratch and cleaned my home dir,
so that everything gnus-relared except my .emacs was absent.

i have the following gnus-select-method setting: (nntp "localhost").

Then i tried to subscribe to my local news server's groups.
But wgen i started gnus, it did not find/show any new newsgroups
on this server (i pressed `A z' and `A k' in a group buffer, but
it showed nothing). But the newsgroups were there! If i try to
subscribe manually to a newsgroup (`U'), then gnus does not show
the nntp backend, nor it shows possible newsgroups (when
completing an empty string). But if i, say, enter a newsgroup
like nntp:some.newsgroup, then gnus subscribes to it.

i was able to subscribe to the newsgroups by entering the server
buffer, and pressing enter on nntp:localhost server. But why
`A z' and `A k' do not work (and gnus does not find new
newsgroups)?

	Best regards, -- Vladimir.

Yes, you can always type in a full group name, even if Gnus doesn't
know about it beforehand.

I've just tried starting Gnus with no init files, and all the groups
seem to get shown when I `A k'.

some more thing: gnus does not show me new newsgroups even for nnmbox
backend. i.e. when i receive new mails, and gnus splits them into
nnmbox groups, the messages which came to new groups (which were not
known to gnus previously, i.e. which received a message for the first
time) are not shown! Only going to the server buffer i'm able to see
those groups and subscribe. This behavior is present for a long time,
afaik (but it was not too annoying, because after i manage to
subscribe to all my groups, all works fine).

	Best regards, -- Vladimir.

Yes. `F' makes Gnus query its backends for new groups.

That reminds me... I had problems with Gnus not finding new mail
groups at work (same place that has APOP problems). At home new groups
has always been found after pressing F. Any debugging ideas? (If I add
them manually with G it works fine).

If you quit and re-start Gnus, does it then find the new groups?
