A belated reply, but maybe it is of help: I noticed the slowness myself
and found out that the agent uses a big amount of disk space as cache.
In the worst case, it loaded several dozen megabytes on entering the
group!
The remedy was to use the gnus-agent-expire-group command for these
groups, which not only speeded things up tremendously, but also shrunk
the size of my ~/News directory by 90%. See also
(Info "(gnus)Agent Expiry").
