Oort Release Schedule

Should I start doing (ir-)regular numbered releases of Oort again?  Or
should we just say that "CVS is it if you want to be ref^H^H^Hupdated"?

One nice thing about numbered updates (ognus-0.45.tar.gz) is that you
can see which version the user is actually using.

If nobody has any objections, I'll start doing releases again on a
more timely basis.  I'll try to make the releases at "sweet points",
where no major new bugs have been introduced lately (i.e., more than
four days after I've written any new code.  :-)

First of all: I think that's a good idea.

I'm wondering: Is there a roadmap or a "that's still to do" list for the
way to Gnus 5.10? Will it be 5.10 or 6.0?

As Oort is alpha, how about taking e.g. the 0.05, applying all bugfixes,
but no new features to it for some weeks and give it out to those who'd
like all the nice new features but are frightened of the real bleeding edge?

That's a possibility.  There's lots of new stuff in Oort that people
should be using, so perhaps the thing would be to aim for a Gnus 5.10
this spring.

My cunning plan was to finish going through all the old mail and news,
looking for stuff that should/could be dealt with.  Two weeks ago I
finished this mailing list and the gnu.emacs.gnus newsgroup.  Last
week I did the nnml:spam and various odds and ends.  I have nnml:misc
(i.e., personal mail) and gnus-bugs left.  That last one is a bit
daunting.

And *then* I thought I'd start on what I wanted to do -- the Saints.

But perhaps that's more of a No Gnus thing.

Cool.  Removing .emacs and .gnus and starting Gnus and trying to 
get things to work without writing elisp is a interesting 
experiment.

<nit>I've always wanted Gnus to figure out that [foo] in subject 
lines probably is a list identifier if all messages in a summary 
buffer have them, and when the user enters the group it should ask 
if the user wants to add [foo] to `gnus-list-identifiers' 
automagically.

But, what if I will enter nnfolder:LinuxKernel where are only five unread
articles and each has [PATCH] in its subject? AI is the thing I hate on
*some* systems. Gnus is not one of the now...

[PATCH] seems to be a common subject prefix in this group. update
`gnus-list-identifiers'? (y/n)

Artificial Intelligence is better when you can put the blame on natural

Gnus doesn't have to query automatically.  There could be a command
`gnus-guess-at-list-identifiers' that would look at the subjects and
suggest an identifier.  People who wants to be queried automatically
could add that function to a hook or something...

Somebody could set up a daily cron job which automatically commits a
new version number every day. ;-)

	What is the collective opinion about a wider dissemination of
 one of these sweet point releases?  I package Gnus for Debian, and
 the official Gnus package is for version 5.8.8, released on Jan 4
 2001, and it lacks lots of nifty things that have been developed in
 oort. 

	Also, emacs21 comes with 5.9.0, and I've been deluged by
 questions why the supposedly more up to date stand alone version is
 older than the bundled version (which caused a flurry of problems
 until the packaging was corrected).

	However, I from the last time I packaged a development
 version, I know better than to just silently do so ;-(

	Are we close to the end of the oort arc, or could we have an
 interim semi-stable release that can be packaged in the meantime?

It'll be OK, I guess, if you name the package oort-gnus, or somesuch,
with the appropriate disclaimers in the description.

I think you should stay with Lars' releases, though.  Not CVS
snapshots.

I think Debian packages of Oort is fine providing that the package is
clearly marked as "Oort Gnus", and that you wait a bit after a release
to see whether it breaks lotsastuff or not...

I think we're somewhat close.  Some time this spring (i. e., this
autumn) 5.10 will be released.

	I'll put oort in the description (with warnings) and give a
 scary looking cvs+date version number. However, given the news that
 Debians freeze seems to be regressing into a thaw, oort may well be
 released before Woody Debian is.

As a user I would appreciate this. I was using 5.8.8 for a long time,
but recently I could not hold any longer and switched to CVS. There
are to many goodies :-)
