Hmm... Lines: header is still generated for mml, not for MIME...
(and is thus very small)

I'm unable to reproduce this.  If I `C-c C-a' an image, the Lines
header generated is correct when I send the message.

Where do you see this incorrect Lines header?

[strangely, my reply stilll did not propagate to the list, so here is

when i send a mail like (`#' signs removed):

To: root
Subject: test
--text follows this line--
Hi

<part type="application/octet-stream" filename="/tmp/filename.tgz" disposition=attachment>
</part>

the recipient receives a message with "Lines: 7"; the same value of
lines is in the *sent mail* buffer.

I'm still not able to reproduce this.  Do you get the same result no
matter what the type of the non-textual part is?  For instance, do you 
get the same results with jpegs?
