Is there any way of configuring gnus so as to allow it render "local"
HTML in email and news articles, but not to attempt to download from a
remote (web) server while reading email/news?

Gnus is supposed to do that automatically. It binds url-standalone
(I think that's the variable name) to t while displaying the
article. I just looked at a piece of spam, and Gnus _attempted_ to
show lots of images, but failed. Not sure if that means that
url-standalone works...

url-standalone didn't actually work the last time I looked at it. If
it's been fixed now, then that's good. If not, somebody should fix
it. :-)

Yup. Still doesn't work, it seems.

(setq w3-honor-stylesheets nil)
(setq w3-delay-image-loads t)

helps, but I'm not sure it catches everything.

But you might not want those settings if you use w3 for other stuff,
and besides, Gnus doing those types of things with mail reminds me of
Outlook.

In which case you may want:

(custom-set-variables

;; Avoid text/html parts if possible (w3-mode is slow). Also avoid
;; text/enriched, since it's often more difficult to read.
 '(mm-discouraged-alternatives '("text/html" "text/enriched"))

;; Buttonize text/html rather than display it automatically. It's frequently
;; spam and I don't want to incur the wait to have it render.
 '(mm-automatic-display (remove "text/html" mm-automatic-display)))

That will skip the HTML entirely if it's in multipart/alternative, and
otherwise will show you the raw HTML with a button; if you want to see it
rendered, press "b" twice.

Getting the standalone bit working is even better of course, but the above
works pretty well for me.

I've now bound these two variables as well before calling the w3
rendering functions.

Hey; neat. I'm ditching Lynx for testing how my web pages look like
in "text mode". Now I'll only use w3, w3m, Mozilla, MSIE, Opera and
Communicator.

Er.

Personally I'd rather not lose out on links, italics and bold.

hey all.

What about using an external program to render html? w3m is nice and
quick. Of course, you lose a lot of the special stuff, like links and
colours, but you do get the info.
