* gnus-sync: `gnus-newsrc-alist' modifications don't survive `M-g'

Given a NNTP group synchronized by gnus-sync.el.

I modify `gnus-newsrc-alist' with updated article marks, for instance (I
also remake the hashtable). Then I hit `g' and everything is fine. But
if I hit `M-g' my changes to `gnus-newsrc-alist' get wiped out. Any
ideas why? Is it some Agent interaction?

Ted

Perhaps you have server marks in your NNTP group?

How would I know? This is against GMane. And if so, how do I override
them when `gnus-sync-read' rewrites the newsrc?

Thanks
Ted

Let's see... I think there's a file... somewhere... called .marks,
which is a per-group thing. "find ~/News -name .marks" should find the
offending files. They should probably be deleted if they exist.

Is Gnus still creating them today? Do we want that?

No, Gnus no longer creates them (by default).

Hmm, no. After removing the .marks and then `s'aving the newsrc.eld:

% find ~/News -name .marks

/home/tzz/News/marks/news.gmane.org/gmane.emacs.devel/.marks
/home/tzz/News/marks/news.gmane.org/gmane.emacs.gnus.general/.marks
/home/tzz/News/marks/news.gmane.org/gmane.emacs.tramp/.marks

I'm using a Gnus Git checkout from 5 days ago. I don't think I've
requested these marks files in my settings.

The variable that controls this is... er... `gnus-propagate-marks'?

LMI> The variable that controls this is... er... `gnus-propagate-marks'?

Sorry, it's nil for me.

*Messages* says:

Exiting summary buffer and applying spam rules
Bootstrapping marks for gmane.emacs.gnus.general...done
Bootstrapping marks for gmane.emacs.devel...done
Bootstrapping marks for gmane.emacs.tramp...done
gnus-sync-newsrc-loader-builder: add nntp+news.gmane.org:gmane.emacs.gnus.general, it's modified

Could gnus-sync.el be doing something? I would think not.

Ted

D'oh! I'm running with `nntp-marks-is-evil' set to t. Gah. I thought
I had cleared out all customisations in this area...

There's a fundamental difference between the marks stored in IMAP and
the marks stored on the nntp backend. The former is useful. The latter
just duplicates the information in the .newsrc.eld file locally, and
isn't particularly.

I thought I had finally separated out the two different things, and
defaulted the former to on and the latter to off, but nope.

I'll fix it up, but not tonig..., er, this morning.

Interesting. I also (not unexpectedly) have the .marks files in all of
my gnusen. These are possibly the cause for gnus-sync's (both the old
and the new) problems: ie. sometimes it updates the marks correctly,
sometimes it doesn't.

It could maybe also be the cause of gnus agent's obscure errors...? But
if it is, it points to a potential issue: As you say, storing marks in
the backend is the right thing to do for nnimap. And nnimap is also the
backend that would benefit the most from a working agent (at least for
me).

Have you gotten around to it? Or should I just go ahead and customize

Yep. Seems to be fixed now. Thanks!

It will be interesting to see what effect this has, if any, on
gnus-sync...?
