I wonder whether we can detect this situation in any reliable way... the streaming makes `g' so so so much faster, but this is the second report I've had that it doesn't work, so it looks like it's not that uncommon. The waiting loop should probably be time-limited. If no data has arrived in a couple of seconds, then we could just break out of the loop.
