I've had a problem with that w3 resets the variables when it first
displays a page. I've tried using both customize and setq, and I also
tried loading different parts of w3 before setting the vars without
success. I finally ended up putting the w3 settings in its own file
and doing a M-x load-file on it after the first time it displays a
page.

The best book on programming for the layman is "Alice in Wonderland";
but that's because it's the best book on anything for the layman.
