I normally do the following when my one of my usual nnml groups gets
too large -- G r "nnml-group-n+1" G m "nnml-group". G E (insert usual
group setup). Is this a completely clean operation? The last time I
did this (to "xemacs-beta") after the first entering and exiting from
the backup group I had much corruption in the original group.
Is this clear, or should I explain more?

It should be clean, and the last time I tried it, everything seemed to
work ok. Has anybody else seen any bugs in this department?
