GNU Emacs 21.3.50.1 (i586-pc-linux-gnu, X toolkit) of 2002-12-27 on
billwlx, Oort Gnus v0.16

Today's cvs gnus, when built via './configure --with-fonts' and
'make', writes a gnus-load.el file that uses the function
`custom-autoload', which is undefined in my emacs. Changing
custom-autoload to autoload seems to work fine.

Cheers -

Things seem to work OK for me. You're using a pretest Emacs --
could it be an Emacs bug?
