setting gnus-read-active-file to nil doesn't seem to work..

According to the documentation:

"The active file can be rather Huge, so if you have a slow network, you can set
gnus-read-active-file to nil to prevent Gnus from reading the active file. This
variable is some by default.

Gnus will try to make do by getting information just on the groups that you
actually subscribe to."

The only problem is that even when I set the gnus-read-active-file to nil it
STILL reads the active file.  I can tell because I am using tcpdump to look at
the stream :(

I have to turn this off because I am using some FAT NNTP servers with HUGE
active files.

I have also set the following vars to nil per the docs:

(setq gnus-check-new-newsgroups nil)
(setq gnus-check-bogus-newsgroups nil)

Any advice?  I really need to turn this off.  It is taking 30-40 minutes to
check e-mail :(

Does it help to set the variable to `some'?
