I am liking Neep over Gamow very much. It is narrower, which is a Good Thing for faces with a point size >14 or so. Underscoring is a little weird looking, but I can get used to that. It doesn't have italics but I use a TrueType based Lucida Sans Typewriter for that (yay, xfstt :). | (add-hook 'gnus-load-hook '(lambda () (set-default-font | (set-default-font | "-nucleus-gamow-medium-r-normal--14-140-75-75-c-*-iso8859-1")))) | But that didn't work. Any ideas on why not? Well, aside from the duplicated set-default-font bit, Emacs does not like changing the default face on the fly once other faces have been defined. But you might try this: (set-face-font 'default "-nucleus-gamow-medium-r-normal--14-140-75-75--*-iso8859-1") instead. That might work. It did for me (note the removal of the 'c' in the spec).
