Topic/Group parameter confusion?

Hi,

I have the following setting for one of topics:

;;; Editing the topic parameters for `Mail For Me'.
;; Type `C-c C-c' after you've finished editing.

((gcc-self . t)
 (total-expire . t)
 (expiry-wait . 31.0)
 (gnus-summary-line-format "%U%R%z %d %(%I%[%-20,20f%]%) %s\n"))

However one of the groups in the topic seems to keep mail for longer
than 31 days: (I'm writing this on May 9)

O   22-Mar [Mark Hachey         ] i'll be at home today
O   22-Mar [Adam Cannon         ] poker tonight
OA  22-Mar [jai suhas sukhatme  ] tax question
O   23-Mar     [-> jai suhas sukhatm] 
OA  23-Mar         [jai suhas sukhatme  ] 
O   23-Mar             [-> jai suhas sukhatm] 
O   24-Mar                 [jai suhas sukhatme  ] 

Setting expiry-wait explicity in a group seems to fix this. Any ideas?

Um...  These messages do not look expirable to me.  But maybe this is
related to the total-expiry thingy, of which I am not a master.

If I understand the manual correctly, these messages should be
expirable.

|      expiry process, even if they are not marked as expirable.  Use with
|      caution.  Unread, ticked and dormant articles are not eligible for
|      expiry.

Is this particular group in more than one topic?

It is only in one topic. I believe this topic parameter is not having
the desired effect. If I set expiry-wait in the group parameters it
has an effect, however setting it in the topic parameters does not
work. I checked the summary for another group in the same topic and it
has articles dating back to 16 Jan:

O   16-Jan [Carolyn Metzler     ] Re: \qed
OA  17-Jan [saumil t            ] Re: happy nyr!
O   18-Jan     [-> saumil t         ] 

How does one debug this?

Perhaps a silly question, but are you sure the expiry process is
hitting that group?  What does `B E' do while you're in the summary?

It says 'Expiring articles...done'. It says the same thing when I use
`q' to quit. I have now added the expire-wait parameter to the group
parameter and things work fine.
