I heard that pgnus supported a feature that allows for the
auto-capitalisation of the first char of a sentance. Anyone know
anything about this?

Try searching for the American spelling:
C-h a capitalize gives
gnus-article-capitalize-sentences
which is bound to W C

The trouble is, this works on an article buffer.. and is a washing
command. I would like to attach something to the message send hook,
or use it interactively when composing in a message buffer. Any
ideas?

I use auto-capitalize.el from Kevin Rodgers. I can send you a copy if
you can't find it on the net (the latest version I have is 2.16)
