If you have `gnus-propagate-marks' set to t, the backends will store
marks themselves, and Gnus will retrieve that data.  (For nntp it's
stored in a file.)  If you twiddle the value on and off and on, Gnus
will, of course, use the marks from the backend, which will, by that
time, be out of date.
