Nope; didn't see anything obvious.

I tried the same just now.

larsi@deer:~$ ssh -v
OpenSSH_4.2p1 Debian-5, OpenSSL 0.9.8a 11 Oct 2005

telnet> q
Connection closed.
Connection to deer closed.

That is, when I hit `^]', I got the telnet prompt immediately, without
hitting return.  So the version of OpenSSH 4.2p1 seems to work
differently that yours do.  (deer is an amd64 machine running sid, but
hasn't been updated in a month or so.)
